Great Wall, Beijing

The Great Wall in Beijing, built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), is the most often seen tourism site in China. It runs over 373 miles, containing about 827 city wall platforms, 71 passes and countless towers.

Forbidden City, Beijing

The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the mid-Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. For almost five centuries, it served as the home of the Emperor and his household, along with the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. It is located in the middle of Beijing, and now houses the Palace Museum.

The reason I list it as the No. 2 place to visit is because it's in the same city as No. 1 and tourists usually visit the two places together.

The Bund, Shanghai

The Bund is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. If you have never been to the Bund, than you have never been to Shanghai. The Bund is within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River, facing Pudong, in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. Building heights are restricted in this area.

Try to avoid weekend and daytime to visit the Bund due to the high population density. The best time to visit the Bund is early morning before 8 a.m. and late night after 10 p.m. when you can enjoy beautiful night scene beside the river.

The reason of its No. 3 place is that Beijing and Shanghai are usually the first city that foreign travellers arrive mainland China. You can plan your travel itinerary accordingly if they are not your final destination.

West Lake, Hangzhou

The reason why Hangzhou enjoys the great honor lies in the fact that it has West Lake. With an average depth of just 5 feet the lake is held in the embrace of hilly peaks on three sides. This water wonderland has been an attraction for centuries and it is small wonder that it was a favourite imperial retreat. The lake and its environs have all the elements of a traditional Chinese garden but on a grand scale. The natural setting of strangely shaped peaks, serene forests and springs, dense foliage and a myriad of blossoms especially in springtime are enhanced by a treasury of sculpture and architectural features.

The best seasons to visit West lake are spring and summer when there are lotus blossoms all over the lake.

The reason of its No. 4 place is that Hangzhou is very close to Shanghai, only a couple of hours travel by train. It's a perfect next stop after you have enjoyed the beautiful scene on the Bund.

Terra Cotta Warriors, Xi'an

The Terracotta Army is a form of funerary art buried with the First Emperor of China. The terracotta figures, dating from 210 BC, were discovered in 1974 by local farmers near Xi'an. The figures vary in height (184-197cm / 6ft-6ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the Generals. The figures include warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Current estimates are that the Terracotta Army were over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits.

Tips: You can buy some Terracotta Warriors Souvenirs there.

Here I only list places which are in/near big cities. These are the 'must-go' places if you go to China. There are many other scenes in China with natural beauty or culture heritage and worth to visit, such as Dian Chi Lake (Kunming), Mogao Grottos (the storehouse of Buddhist art), and Yellow Mountain etc.

Lhasa Tibet

Tibet is a place lonely from the rest of the world with the winding hills of the high plateau and the amazing Himalayas. Today in the age of information, people can easily get to the mysterious place with jet aircraft, highways, now even trains! Lhasa is the political and cultural capital of Tibet. Lhasa means in Tibetan "The land of gods". There are numerous scenic spots and historical sites in Lhasa Tibet.
Top Attractions in Tibet:
Potala Palace, Nobulingka, Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery, Ganden Monastery and Jokhang Temple being the most worth visiting. Shigatse is the second biggest city in Tibet. Shigatse means in Tibetan "The Estate that materializes one's Dream ". Tashilhunpo Monastery is its main historic attraction. Mt. Kailash, in western Tibet is holy to both Hinduism and Buddhism. 

Lijiang Yunnan

Lijiang is situated in Yunnan Province of south China. It is on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. It has the history of over 1,300 years. Lijiang is inhabited by Naxi people. It is under the administration of the Naxi Autonomous County. It stands on a plateau at 2,600m above sea level. It is well known for its natural scenery and green vegetation. It has the Jade Dragon Mountain as its backdrop. The old town blends naturally with the natural scenery. Thel local Naxi people has developed a culture called "Dong Ba Culture". Classical Naxi music is considered as the "living musical fossil" due to its long history.

Iguazu Falls

One of the great natural wonders of the world, Iguaçu Falls is situated on the border between Brazil and Argentina. The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along the Iguazu River. The most impressive of them all is the Devil’s Throat a U-shaped with a height of 82 meter (269 ft). The falls can be reached from the cities Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil and Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, as well as from Ciudad del Este in Paraguay. On the Brazilian side there is a long walkway along the canyon with an extension to the lower base of the Devil’s Throat.

Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha is a beautiful archipelago with pristine beaches, landscapes and wildlife, situated 354 km (220 miles) off the northeastern coast in Brazil. The archipelago was discovered by Amerigo Vespucci in 1503 and temporarily occupied by the Dutch and French before Portugal established dominion in 1737. Today only the largest of the 21 islands is inhabited with a population of about 3,500. The islands are a Mecca for divers and snorkelers with warm waters year-round and very good visibility even at depths of 50 meters.

I have not done a top 10 list for a long time now, and with Summer Holidays on, I thought it was a good time to post this list – The top 10 tourist destinations in India.

India is very very diverse – probably the most diverse of countries that you will find on this earth. We have some of the Coldest places in Kashmir, A place that has highest rainfall in world – Cherrapunji, and also one if the driest places on the Earth – The Thar Desert. Adding to that – More than half of Indian boundary is home to beautiful beaches. And don’t forget that Northern part of India hosts Himalayan Ranges snow capped mountains.

Mix all this with different cultures and hundreds of Languages and Dialects – You have a got a potent mix of diversity. If you really think, I really am amazed that with such diverse people & geographies how do we operate as one single democratic country !

Agra

Agra’s Taj Mahal is one of the most famous buildings in the world, the mausoleum of Shah Jahan’s favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is one of the New Seven Wonders of the world, and one of threeWorld Heritage Sites in Agra.

Completed in 1653, the T?j Mahal was built by the Mughal king Sh?h Jah?n as the final resting place for his beloved wife, Mumt?z Mahal. Finished in marble, it is perhaps India’s most fascinating and beautiful monument. Kashmir

The caves are located just outside the village of Ajantha / Ellora in Aurangabad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Since 1983, the Ajanta & Ellora Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Darjeeling

Darjeeling in India owes’ its grandeur to its natural beauty, its clean fresh mountain air and above all, the smiling resilient people for whom it is a home. Known for its natural splendor, Darjeeling’s best gift to its’ visitors is the dawn of a new day. The mountains awaken first with a tentative peeking of the sun.
